Tour de France 2007: The publicity caravan Part IV

Part IV

I am not a beer drinker, neither an alcohol drinker. I sometimes enjoy
drinking but once in a few months or a couple of times a year.

15. The Panach' caravan. This Panach' caravan made me finally convinced me
to try one. I bought a four-pack just like this Panach'-mobile. I haven't tasted them yet.
The four-pack-mobile.

Panach goods: (pictures will be added later, a key ring)

16. The CFTC caravan. What are they? I have to google later to find out.
CFTC goods:?

17. The Haribo caravan. On the other hand, Haribo is familiar to me.

One of the less known or unnoticed facts about the Haribo caravan is
that the wheel covers were also coordinated with the product each car
was promoting. Does someone also notice this detail?

Another Haribo-mobile. Photoed at Stage 4 start.

Here you can also see the coordinated wheel covers. If you stare at them
while they move, you may feel sick.

Haribo goods: (ditto, their products)

18. The Antargaz caravan.

Antargaz goods: (ditto, a key ring)

Tour de France 2007: The publicity caravan Part III

Part III

10. The Simpsons or "les Simpson" the movie caravan. Homer, Marge, Bart,
Lisa and Maggie. This theme (carrots and horse or donuts and Homer) might
have worked for the riders, who came an hour later.
This caravan, according to eye-witnesses (an English couple) was not
in Great Britain.

A little bit of the Simpsons touch.

The Simpson goods: (pictures will be added later, the Simpsons' masks)

11. One of the main sponsors, Supermarche Champion supermarket chain.
Red dots all over.

Champion goods: (ditto, hats and caps)

12. The Ancel caravan. They gave a pretty much straight forward message or should I say
"freebies". Their signature product; Ancel(R) Bretzels by Dr. Oetker.

I ate at least 10 packs of them. They made me thirsty, which leads to an
avid craving for water. Can you spell Aquarel?

Ancel Bretzels goods: (ditto, although self-explanatory)

13. La Nouvelle Vie Ouvrière caravan. I never figured out what "la cgt" or "nvo"
stands for.

This photo shows that this obscure caravan came in more than two cars.

LNVO goods: (ditto, if there is one ever)

14. The Kleber caravan. It is a tire manufacture (perhaps) and it shows.

The front view of this tire-mobile.

Kleber goods: (ditto, a reflective band)

Tour de France 2007: The publicity caravan Part II

Most of these photos were taken near the
summit ofCol d'Aubisque. I waited for two nights before seeing any kind of
actions like the race or caravan so I felt like taking pictures of the publicity
caravan. The weather was just gorgeous.

Other pictures were taken at the Stage 4 start.

Normally, you can't see these cars and parade unless you go visit the
actual caravan parade. I am posting the pictures for those who were not
able to be there. So enjoy!

I did not take pictures but actually there is a kind of "pre-caravan" caravan.
It consists of Aquarel trucks and some other cars which I don't remember
at the moment. The Aquarel trucks give us "L'Eaufficiel de la Caravane'"
but not water bottles. What is "L'Eaufficiel de la Caravane"?. It is a paper.
(pictures will be added here later)
Usually about 30 minutes after this pre-caravan cars, the real caravan arrived.

So this is the beginning of publicity caravan.

1. ASO caravan. Nothing fancy. Just a yellow truck with a huge megaphone
on it.

The publicity caravan is led by TdF organizer's car. Unfortunately, they
don't give out any stuff. They are not popular. I suppose the object on the
back of the truck is a megaphone to announce the arrival of the caravan.

2. The LCL caravan. The TT man and the stuffed lion buggy, which lead
the Beetles can be seen in Part I.
I learned to decipher the French license plates. The last two numbers
indicate the prefecture number. Here 87 means that this Audi is
registered in Haute-Vienne in Limousin.

One thing I did not get was these LCL baseball cap. I was always wearing
Team CSC cap and I realized, rather belatedly, that was why they did not
give me that cap.

Pictures taken at Stage 4 start. As you can see, there were a lot of
Beetles.

The time-trial man is presented by LCL. The puppet is followed by the
stuffed line buggy and a lot of yellow new Beetles. The girls sitting in the
Beetles give LCL goods.

You can see the stuffed lion buggy in the Part I.

LCL goods: (to be pictured and uploaded here, LCL caps and bags)

3. The SeaFrance caravan.

Who said, "Love boat"?

The "SEA FRANCE" boat. The ferry on the mountain top. Noah's Ark?

The boat is followed by these Dover - Calais mobiles. Those girls whose
torso is out of the roof are scattering the goods.

SeaFrance goods: (ditto, a ball-point pen)

4. Journal de Mickey caravan. The Mickey caravan or should I say Disney caravan?
What were they promoting? I still don't know.

Mickey goods: (pictures will be added, some leaflets?)

5. Gel Douche Fa caravan. Simply put, the Fa caracan. Gel Douche means, I
think, shower soup in French.

They are "Fa" mobiles.

The Fa truck features the shower man and the tropical theme.

This is the front view of the truck. I am more intrigued by the yellow
pins worn by those two people. Do you know what I mean?

What are they? They (pins) seems like yellow jersey pins. These people
were LCL VIPs?

Another Fa mobile.

FA goods: (ditto, miniature Fa products)

6. The Skoda caravan.
The Skoda Octavia.

The Skoda Fabia.

The Skoda mobile. The Skoda caravan featured a lot of Skoda Fabias and
Octavias.

Skoda goods: (ditto, those ubiquitous Skoda hats and miniature model cars)

7. Les Cadets Juniors caravan???? Where were they? I did not notice them.

8. The Dr. Oetker Ristorante caravan.

Dr. Oetker's Ristorante Pizzas. This strange automobile is supposed to
a table with a fluffy table cloth with pizzas on top at a romantic candle
light dinner.

This truck carries a table with pizzas. Candle light is also the key element.

The girl is handing out a folding fan.

She can be the same girl who appears in the previous photo.

Dr. Oetker goods: (ditto)

9. The T-Mobile caravan.

The T-Mobile cars in pink (Magenta in German). They came in a pair,
two Audis. The license number indicates that this car is registered in
Ingolstadt (Donau).

T-mobile goods: (ditto, caps and inflatables)

Tour de France 2007: The publicity caravan Part I

The publicity caravan Part I

In 2006, I noticed that the publicity caravan was less entertaining than
it was in 2005.

Waiting for the race to arrive is a bit boring when you have nothing else to do.
Some people eat and drink or read. Others watch TV or take a nap. I painted
whenever I could. For most of the spectators, there is nothing to do.
People need entertainment. That is where the caravane publicitaire
(Publicity caravan) comes in, I think.

This publicity caravan is a source of entertainment, if not the only one.
The caravan is associated with "freebies". In French they are called
"cadeaux (presents, gifts)". The participants of the caravan want publicity.
Some of them advocate the awareness of our environment. It was
ÉCO EMBALLAGES, who quietly drove trash cans (Smart Fourtwo inside)
and gave out NO freebies in 2006. Since their message was, and still is, NOT
to litter the street and other places, they did not distribute anything.
It was considerate for them to do so. The downside was that it did not work!

This year, they got smater; they brought two percussionists and entertained
us with the music. Their caravan was better.

I think the winner of the caravane publicitaire in 2006 was Skoda. Skoda had
enough exposure as the supplier of the official cars. In addition to that,
they had a bunch of dancers with that catchy "S. K. O. D. A. ... S. K. O. D. A.
(in French)" song. It still rings in my ears. The music was from a song called,
I think, Disco or something. The original song goes, "D. I. S. C. O. ..."

It was a bit disappointing to find that the number of female dancers in
the whole caravan was way down in 2006. In 2005 there were at least
two sets of female dancers on modified buses or trucks. Please don't take this
comment as a sexist statement. Well, if you are offended, you can write a
comment on this blog entry and let me know.

The freebies are souvenirs. I wanted to have one of each for souvenirs.
When I had more than two, I gave the extra to kids or bartered them for the
ones that I did not have.

You can not get enough of those which you can consume later, like
the ground coffee beans from "CAFÉ GRAND MÈRE", that tasty meat
product from "COCHONOU", those elastic snacks from "HARIBO", the
mineral water bottles from "NESTLÉ AQUAREL" or "NESQUIK".

The most practical freebie was the yellow sacoche (a sack) from
"LCL - LE CRÉDIT LYONNAIS". I used it to carry water bottles when
riding my bike.

Well, all the above is something that I felt in 2006. Now I am going to write
about what I saw, obtained and felt in 2007.

Here, I introduce only a handful of caravan vehicles. I will take picutures of
the freebies sometime later and post the entire collection of my
Tour de France 2007 publicity caravan freebies.

This is the caravan car from the organizer. Very spectacular! NOT!
This car does not give anything so it was not so popular.

The LCL Time Trial man! He does not pedal. The animals on Caisse
d'Epargne caravan trucks do pedal although one of them stopped
doing so sometime later.

The lion, if I remember correctly, is the symbol of LCL, the bank who
sponsors the Tour de France.

This American cartoon was plugging its movie version. The Englishman
I met and talked at Stage 2 ravitaillement swore that he and his wife
did not see this "Les Simpson" caravan in his home land. I guess (I know
I am guessing too much) that in French grammar a family name does not
take a plural form. The family name "Simpson" takes "the Simpsons" form
when it refers to the family in English grammar.

This artargas caravan gave out key chains and I think a safety vest. I did
not get that vest.

"La vache qui rit" (reads la-vash-kiri) was very popular. I saw and heard
adults shout the name. Later I learned that vache meant cow when a
sticker on certain cheese said it was made from the milk of vache. It was
not too difficult to guess. I knew that qui meant who. I kept wondering
the cow that does what? And much later (Stage 20), I learned that rit
meant smiles as in 'she smiles' from a Dane, who is a Team CSC fan and
fluent in French. So "La vache qui rit" means the cow that smiles.
It made sense in the end. The logo itself was actually self-explanatory.

This supermarket chain is one of the main sponsors of the Tour de France.
The dot jersey is presented by this supermarket.

The Australian team, Tour down under and Road Sign, had a good Tour
as Cadel Evans had an excellent Tour this year.
